“We Caught You Being Awesome!!!”
The Main Idea will be starting a basic token economy system at camp. We will be using poker chips as the immediate reinforcement for “caught you being awesome” moments during daily activities. Possible actions that might earn a camper a token would be helping a cabin mate make her bed, helping a counselor with a task above and beyond the normal expectation, using kind and thoughtful words towards other campers, winning bunk inspection, standing up to bullying by refusing to be a bystander, befriending a shy camper, etc. The girls can then “spend” their tokens at the camp store on anything they want. The Junior Staff girls will “run” the camp store. They will set the store up, keep items stocked, set “prices”, help campers shop, and keep the store area clean during camp.
The goal is to focus both staff and campers on the positive actions of campers rather than the negative. When campers see their friends and cabin mates enjoying the rewards of positive behavior, they too will start to focus on more mindful positive behavior. This program will also enhance the staff’s focus on the campers ‘ positive actions rather than on the negative. As they focus on, and give praise and reinforcement towards the positive actions of campers, they will begin to notice something “magical;” they will start to see a lot more positive behavior and will start to see a lot less negative.
Please help us keep our store well stocked.
